Past Liu Jin-xi (Donnie Yen) is mysterious. Not so clear where this comes a quiet man. That people know, Liu was a shopkeeper, had a wife and two children. Liu does look ordinary. No one thought that Liu was in fact a martial arts champion with a dark past.

During this time Liu was always hiding his past. Everything is uncovered because of the emergence of two robbers who tried to break into his store. Trying to defend his possessions, Liu Jin-xi and then engage the fight with two of these vicious robbers. Liu is trying to cover so that he does not look like someone who mastered the martial arts high but still there was a suspicious person.

Villagers Liu's residence is not suspicious, but another with Xu Bai-jiu (Takeshi Kaneshiro). Detectives suspect there is something wrong with a scene that only seems to happen to it. [Japan Movie] A Honeymoon in Hell: Mr. and Mrs. Oki's Fabulous Trip

Nobuyoshi Ooki (Yutaka Takenouchi) and Saki (Asami Mizukawa) are a newlywed couple, but have lived together for a lengthy time prior to their marriage. They move into their new home, but any sense of excitement between the couple seems to have evaporated. While unpacking, Nobuyoshi and Saki notice that their rice cooker is missing.

Not long afterwards, they go to a nearby market to buy some household items. Saki passes an odd looking man (Akira Emoto) who is wearing a soaked trench coat. She notices that the guy is trying to hide something and it looks like their missing rice cooker. Saki chases after the guy, but the guy disappears somewhere on the roof of the building. There's an old bathtub on the roof.

Saki goes back down the stairs and passes a fortuneteller booth. The fortuneteller (Kirin Kiki) asks Saki if she is looking for something and then hands her a poster advertising a trip to hell. Nobuyoshi and Saki become interested in the trip and the following day visit the fortuneteller shop. The couple signs up for the tour trip to hell for their honeymoon!

The newlywed couple prepare for a 1 night/2 day trip and go to the roof. There, Tajima (Hairi Katagiri) tells them the bathtub is the entrance to hell. The couple thinks its a joke, but Nobuyoshi puts his hand into the dirty water and soon he is drawn into the bathtub and disappears. Saki follows her husband.

The couple lands in hell and wander along a deserted road. An unidentified red man (Denden) attacks the couple, but they are saved by a pretty blue skinned girl named Yoshiko (Ai Hashimoto). They arrive at the hotel Iijimaya and there Iijima guides them, but the couple can't understand what Iijima is talking about.

What is going to happen to their honeymoon and will the couple ever be able to get the passion back in their lives?

Fallen Angels was originally planned as one section of director Wong Kar-Wai's best-known film, Chungking Express, but eventually it grew into its own distinct and delirious shape. In many ways, Fallen Angels may be the better film, a dark, frantic fun-house ride through Hong Kong's nighttime world. Part of the film is a love story between two people who have barely met: a young, ultra-hip hit man (Leon Lai) and the dreamy operative (Michele Reis) who plans his jobs. Much of the movie is given over to a very strange subplot about a manic mute (Takeshi Kaneshiro) who goes on bizarre nocturnal prowls through a closed food market--like almost everything else in Wong's films, this is antic, stylish, and oddly touching, all at the same time.

It must be said that, also like Wong's other films, Fallen Angels is fragmented and oblique to the point of occasional incomprehensibility…but then suddenly something wild or wonderful happens, such as the moment when the killer leaves the scene of a spectacular shooting and is promptly waylaid by a cheerful old school chum on a public bus. These coups--whether lyrical, violent, or simply "how on earth did they get that shot?"

--are tossed off by Wong and cinematographer Christopher Doyle with all the cool of the hired killer, as though the movie were a cigarette dangling from a pair of oh-so-casual lips. As a sequel, IP MAN 2 is still not far from the 'soul' of the first film. The theme still remains a matter of nationalism, against oppression. If in the first part of the Ip Man had to deal with the Japanese government that invaded China, this time Ip Man had to deal with the British government, represented by the figure of this boxer named Twister.

It's also not something that surprised because most Asian films have always focused on the problem of 'feeling'. Director usually use dramatic scene as a means to involve the audience into the film, in contrast to the western method that uses the story plot, characterizations and dialogue as a means to involve the audience.

If the plot is predictable then that can become a weapon clearly is a character and visualization of the story itself. About this one, it seems the IP MAN 2 is still pretty good. Good cop, bad cop is one of the topics most frequently used in Hong Kong films. This time again we were treated to the work of director Dante Lam who took this topic. Not just taking the same topic with the previous films, but this movie can say is follow the pattern of generic movie with a theme like this. There is no mystery. No questions were mounting and make the audience wait until the end of the movie. Everything is almost palpable depicted since the beginning of the film.

Nothing wrong was because this movie was made not to burden the audience with a bunch of question marks. Dante Lam would like to invite the audience to have fun. The trick? Regale shooting, explosions, dang each blow. Again this is not an error because the action movie is about action and the story line was not too important.

About acting, no one is too prominent. Duo Leon Lai and Richie Ren plays quite sufficient even though it seems it's not their fault entirely. Looks like the script did not allow them to do much. The proof of the two main characters are apparently not dealt with cooked so it is more memorable as the characters are two dimensional that suddenly appear and then disappear again.

Cracks logic is also quite a lot and it became evidence that actual storyline was not too important. He just there to assemble a number of dramatic scene that is already there in the mind of the director.

Hikikomori or The loner is a Korean horror film which tells the story of Su-na, a teenage girl cheerful and pleasant, with a close friend of Jung Ha, who are victims of oppression of their classmates. Not bear abused, Ha Jung then turned into hikikomori and suicide.

TRUE LEGEND At least this is the third film that tried to explore the life story of the famous swordsman with magic tricks that drunk. But do not compare this film with his Drunken Master Jackie Chan or the King of his Beggar Stephen Chow because of the three films seem to TRUE LEGEND is going to be the worst.

Actually, if for mere entertainment, not something wrong with this TRUE LEGEND. Offered ideas simple enough. Yuen Woo-Ping, the director, it still provides excellent martial arts movie although this time fight scenes seem too forced, so inevitably appear dull impression. No one stands out from the side as well as Michelle Yeoh's acting appears only briefly and can not do much for this movie. What's worse, Yuen Woo-Ping did not seem to hesitate to leap into the future so that the formation of a weak character, and consequently no strong bond between the characters with the audience.

'LITTLE BIG SOLDIER', Soldiers and Generals

New Tokyo Decadence - The Slave, made in 2007 by Osamu Sato. Young Rina is a high school girl by day and works as a dominatrix by night. She's good at it since she's actually a masochist so she knows what her clients want. When she moves to the city she gets a job at a company where her boss quickly exposes her as a masochist and takes her on as his slave.

She has to do whatever he says whenever he says it, no matter where they are. He is also allowed to have other women as long as they are not his slaves. It's not hard to figure out that their games will lead to jealousy. When a co-worker falls in love with Rina it gets even more complicated. Rina is played by AV and pink film actress Rinako Hirasawa who made her pink film debut in Shinji Imaoka's Frog Song in 2005 and New Tokyo Decadence is based on her own experiences in the world of BDSM. The good thing with New Tokyo is that it doesn't feel as Sato is being judgmental towards his characters in any way.

The s&m scenes never turn into just a gimmick for the film, and it doesn't cross over into abuse like in so many other films. There is no bad childhood or any other trauma to explain away Rina's masochistic behavior. Sato also creates some truly erotic scenes that takes place outside the bedroom without the actors shedding any clothes at all and as tired as it may sound, he makes you care about the characters. Beautiful Women of China represents a 3-DVD set of traditional Chinese movies,each featuring a beautiful star, and each a movie unto its own. By far, Gong Li in "Ju Dou" is the best of the triparte. She plays the wife of a husband who owns a silk dying factory. He tortures her day and night requesting that she bear him a son but can't really do his part so he takes it out of her by tying her down and beating her. She falls for one of the hired help ala Lady Chatterly's Lover who gives her a son, yet the husband claims it to be his. The rest of the plot thickens and you can imagine how it develops.

Gong Li is fascinating to watch -- beautiful in face and body and plays the character well both in the verbal and non-verbal parts. Xia Lu, stars in the second DVD called Endless Way. This is a long, torturous movie of a village high up in the mountains that get their water from down below in a cistern that is slowly drying up. A push is made to tunnel through the mountain to bring water. I ached just watching the women and men carry water in wooden barrels up from the cistern and over narrow pathways to get this precious commodity to their village. Some of it gets spilled, barrels fall apart -- such as life.

The secondary title of this movie might be to "bear and forbear." The third DVD is a little more modern and urbane. Life Show stars Tao Hong, another beautiful, glamorous actress who takes on the role of caring for her nephew and drug addicted brother following her mother's death. The movie takes place in a small restaurant in Shanghai. If you are into understanding Chinese culture, its nuances, geographical diversity, cinematography, etc., then buy this 3-DVD Set. The beauty of these three actresses is in their acting skills and outward appearance. American movie goers might find these three films a little exasperating.

Complicating matters is the repeatedly unstable condition of his sickly daughter -- who had undergone a very dangerous & difficult heart transplant surgery that required a very rare type of "organ donor match" in order for the surgical procedure to have even the slightest chances of success (a "MacGuffin" referred to in the movie as "Beta Alergic"). "Inspired," if you will, by a thread of ghostly apparitions and other related inexplicable sights & sensations, the specialist becomes convinced that the spirit connected to the latest skull in his possession will not rest quietly until it has been given its face back. During this process he gradually becomes convinced that his daughter had become the recipient of the heart of the skull/ghost in question and that the circumstances under which it was acquired may be highly (and frighteningly) suspect. Et cetera and so-forth.

So the real question becomes, Can I recommend this title for purchase? At it's currently listed price, I'd say no -- especially if you're so fed up with the "A-Horror" cliches of recent years that you'd feel insulted that a movie would make such deliberate use of them for no other purpose than simply to capitalize on that market. Should the price come down on it, however-- say, somewhere in the neighborhood of $14.95 & under --then I'd say go ahead and give it a look-see, it wouldn't hurt much of anything then, if you did.

Long enough nor is there an action movie that tells about ninjas. Ninja movie itself popular in the 1980s and then a lot of films have tried to uncover the mystery cults that never existed in Japan. Create a ninja who had idolized this film probably could be a refresher for your thirst while NINJA Assassin mention this as a spectacular film still seems not quite right. There are some weaknesses of this film and it seems to be a trademark for most of the movie countrymen. The first plot is less well-organized so that there was leakage of logic here and there. Too many coincidences that disrupt the elements of this logic was quite annoying because ultimately this film is like soap opera that just happens to be embracing the concept of the key to everything.

The decision to use as the main actor Rain seemed too trends based on the appearance of using Asian stars who later grew rampant. To be honest it was not much help because in addition had no acting background is sufficient, Rain also appear to be experiencing difficulties in terms of language. As a result only one secret weapon that can still be used as a film director James McTeigue is action action and visual treat. The Warrior AND THE WOLF is adapted from a story by Yasushi Inoue's director Tian Zhuangzhuang which also serves as a screenwriter of this film. The result is a combination of fighting in a war with the relationship 'unique' between Lu with a mysterious woman played by Maggie Q. The plot itself was very confusing because there was an odd relationship to highlight two different people.

Amazingly beautiful Zhang Ziyi struggles to carry the film. As good and beautiful the actress is, even Zhang cannot carry a film all by herself. Her portrayal of Empress Wan is actually the film's center; Zhang's character is in the middle of deception, lust and eventual betrayal. Thankfully, Zhang has the charisma to pull off an underdeveloped character such as Empress Wan. However, Zhang feels a bit unseasoned and too young (perhaps) for the role of the empress. Don't get me wrong, I think Zhang Ziyi is an awesome actress, but the role feels tailor-made for Chinese veteran actress Gong Li. Daniel Wu plays Wu Luan; a brooding, quiet and never shows his emotions in calculating vengeance. Wu plays an acceptable performance, after all, he does play "Hamlet" which was meant as a person with minor momentum, instead of displaying raw anger he imposes his wrath through indirect means. I guess it was a good move for the screenplay to emphasize Empress Wan's character than Wu Luan himself, I doubt Daniel Wu will be able to carry the film at all.

The performances are good for the most part. It's just that the characters seemed a bit underdeveloped that the lead characters will have some difficulty connecting with its audience. The film does take off strongly but it couldn't stay aloft. Supporting actress Zhao Xun (Ming Ming) has huge talent but her character of Quing is too simple and a bit one-dimensional. Ge You comes out with an outstanding performance as Emperor Li; his powerful portrayal is truly superb and note-worthy. Ultimately, while this film is loosely based on "Hamlet", the climax does occur in a banquet and this is a Chinese film where the old adage applies: No evil deed will go unpunished and repaid.

The Taiping Rebellion has plunged the country in chaos. General Quing-yun Pang (Jet Li) is the lone survivor of a massive battle between the Christian Taiping and the Qing dynasty under command. That evening, he finds comfort in the arms of comely Lian (Xu Jinglei) but she disappears the following day. Pang encounters a group of bandits led by Er-hu Zhao (Andy Lau) and Jiang (Kaneshiro) who are having difficulty in survival. As fate would have it, the three takes a blood oath to join the Qing army to quell the rebellion.

The Taiping rebellion is among the bloodiest civil war ever recorded in history. The body count rivals the ones during World War II. The Taiping rebellion has a lot to do with religion and cultural ideology, and those powerful issues have been downplayed in favor of the theme of brotherhood, love and war. The film fails to take advantage of its historical context. Quite disappointing really, apparently, the producers presume that the usual theme of brotherhood and loyalty are more universal and more appealing to international audiences. I looked up the details of the Taiping rebellion, and I have to say, even though "The Warlords" is in no means a bad film, it's full potential hasn't been achieved. Rather, the rebellion is only used as a backdrop and not really the film's main premise.

As for the battle scenes, it may well be the bloodiest I've seen so far in Hong Kong cinema. Limbs are severed and there are a few gruesome beheadings. The sequences still have the martial arts influence, but no hints of wires are shown. U.S. audiences may need hints of Chinese history to be able to fully grasp the proceedings, there's a lot of commentary to China's tumultuous past and there is some effective human drama in the brothers' contrasting ideas regarding war and righteousness. Pang is a realist while Er-hu is an idealist, I'm pretty certain you have an idea how two opposing ideologies cannot coexist. Sadly, the missing cultural impact of the war minimizes the film's depth, making the horrors of war less involving.

Gol &Gincu is a wonderful entry into Malaysian culture. Partly a film about "girl-power" - a group of young women form a "futsal" team and is reminiscent of and inevitably compared to movies like `Bend it Like Becham.' Set in urban Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia the movie centers on Putri as she changes over time from prissy fashion princess to futsal champion. In the process of this transformation Putri learns about self worth, the ever-changing meaning of love, and life's important values like loyalty and perseverance. What began as a quest to win back her soccer-crazy ex-boyfriend by coming into his world - the lessons learned transcend the arguably juvenile goal - no pun intended. The plotline may sound familiar: Two mismatched cops are assigned as reluctant partners to solve a crime. Culturally they are complete opposites, and they quickly realize they can't stand each other. Directed by Brett Ratner, Rush Hour doesn't break any new ground in terms of story, stunts, or direction. It rehashes just about every "buddy" movie ever made--in fact, it makes films such as Tango and Cash seem utterly original and clever by comparison. So, why did this uninspired movie make over $120 million at the box office? Was the whole world suffering from temporary insanity? Hardly. The explanation for the success of Rush Hour is quite simple: chemistry. The casting of veteran action maestro Jackie Chan with the charming and often hilarious Chris Tucker was a serendipitous stroke of genius.

Fans of Jackie Chan may be slightly disappointed by the lack of action set pieces that emphasize his kung-fu craft. On the other hand, those who know the history of this seasoned Hong Kong actor will be able to appreciate that Rush Hour was the mainstream breakthrough that Chan had deserved for years. Coupled with the charismatic scene-stealer Tucker, Chan gets to flex his comic muscles to great effect. My expectations were quite high for this one, as I had heard from several people that it is definetly a great martial arts action film. I also see a lot of comparisons to the previously released "SPL aka Kill Zone" and rightfully so, since Flashpoint has both the same director (Wilson Yip) and the same action star (Donnie Yen). Though I find Flashpoint not quite up to par overall with SPL, that's still saying quite a bit, since SPL seems to be the film to beat these days. But what Flashpoint may lack in overall tone, it more than makes up for with breathtakingly superb fight action, Donnie Yen style.

Now when I say Donnie Yen style, it's cool and it's MMA (mixed martial arts). Well, at least he's always trying to act cool (as many reviewers will point out about Yen) and I guess it works, but its never necessary. Yen is so skillfull with his choreogrpahy and skill that that's plenty cool enough for me. Flashpoint is praised for its incredible fight action, but it will have to wait about an hour into the film for it to begin, When it does, it is intense and never lets up. The final 30 minutes of the film is the huge climax.

Tensions and emoitons are at the highest (I want to say almost comparable to SPL at this point, and ironically the stories are somewhat similar as far as Yen's character is concerned). The tension can be felt in the fights, as the past hour of the film all comes together in what is to be a spectacular finish. There is a decent shootout that occurs throughout fields of grass before we see the big one on one between Donnie Yen and our main villain - Collin Chou (Matrix Sequals, Forbidden Kingdom). The fight lasts 8 minutes and is almost unlike anything I have seen. Even Yen and Chou stated that this fight was the most difficult and accomplished of their careers thus far. It is fast, furious, and complete with a few slow motion kicks and punches that all felt perfectly placed - you can almost feel the raw power behind a Donnie Yen knockout.

As good as the climax of Flashpoint may be, its the first hour that keeps it from being a perfect film. Though the story is interesting and worth watching to feel the true impact of the exciting conclusion, its still a slow ride that has almost no action to keep things moving. The characters, plot, script etc also don't have quite the effect of that in SPL, and the villain Collin Chou was basically an average villain without any unique qualities (until the last 30 minutes of the film!)

Despite the slow hour of the film, I can't stress enough how much it is still worth it when that last 30 minutes comes around. I'm not sure we'll see a fight quite like that again anytime soon. It is definelty worth buying this dvd and you will want to watch it several times as I already have. 4.5 Overall for exceptional martial arts action.

The nature of exploitation films is to make people believe that they're seeing something serious, but in actuality it's gross exaggerations and stereotypical characters mixed into a plot that can seamlessly show brutality, sex, fetishism, superpowers and kung-fu because they're all "integral" to the storyline. They turn out (mostly years after their initial release) to be dated pieces of celluloid tripe that draw cult followings... look at "Blackula" or "Cleopatra Jones" if you need an example of how this is done in America with moniority populations.

"Chinese Torture Chamber Story" is no exception. One has only to look at this title to know that. C'mon, like the word "torture" *isn't* inflammatory. Please...

Now for the confusing part: I like this film. I am one of those people who has seen this film and enjoyed it immensely. I'm sure if anyone knows anything about this film it's the famous in-flight coitus scene that can be found on the 'net for download. There are money shots that would kill people and a fabulous parody of "Ghost".

In summary, I believe that many people will find this DVD offensive. Others will find it hysterical. Still others will find it at a friend's house, borrow it and never give it back. You decide which one you are for yourself.

After being chased by gangsters, four Chinese tourists in Thailand take refuge with a Thai voodoo master. They have a good relationship with the voodoo master at first; however, things change after the voodoo master's sister falls in love with one of the four: Pon, who is engaged to a woman back in Hong Kong. She asks her brother for a love potion to give Pon, but the other three drink the potion by mistake. The love potion makes them go crazy with lust, and they gang rape her. The voodoo master then follows the four back to Hong Kong where he targets them, one by one, for gruesome death.

After the three rapists are down, the last of the group, Pon, gets help from his fiancee's Thai witch friend. The Thai witch vows to defend Pon, and, of course, we end up with a battle between the Thai witch and voodoo master.

The film is highly entertaining and certainly not boring. I would recommend it to anyone who thinks my description above sounds interesting.

This film is one of the best movies ever made about a real life and true Kung Fu Master. Donnie Yen plays the part of Yip Man, at first when I heard that a movie of Yip Man was being made and that Donnie Yen was playing the main role well I thought that he would have to learn Wing Chun for at lease a year to be believable but his Wing Chun was so good that it appeared that he had been learning Wing Chun Kung Fu for a long time.

I've seen this movie about 6 or 7 times now and all I can tell you is that I can't get enough of it. Now I don't think every scene in the movie was factual or based on the life of this amazing man but I do know that Yip Man was and is the main reason why Wing Chun is even known about today. If it were not for him accepting students in Hong Kong, then Wing Chun would possibly be hidden forever. Yip Man's most famous student was the great Bruce Lee, due to his popularity people around the world learned of the great system of Kung Fu known as "WING CHUN"

Getting martial-arts superstars Jet Li and Jackie Chan together in the same action film is like a fantasy come true, even if The Forbidden Kingdom is more of a children's movie than an instant kung-fu classic. Yes, Li and Chan square off in a lengthy, acrobatic fight scene that is a lot of fun, though it can't be what such a scene might have been even a decade ago: careful editing now compensates for the 54-year-old Chan's slower moves and reflexes. Still, Chan doesn't disappoint as Lu Yan, a drunken immortal in ancient China who mentors a modern-day American kid, Jason (Michael Angarano), the latter having slipped into the past while in possession of a magical staff that belongs to the imprisoned Monkey King (Li). In order to get back to his own time and help an old friend (also Chan) wounded by thugs, Jason accompanies Lu Yan and a lovely warrior, Golden Sparrow (Liu Yifei), on a journey to return the staff. Along the way, a (mostly) silent monk (Li, again), who has spent his life in search of the staff, joins their mission.

He helps Lu Yan train Jason in fighting and adding more muscle to the party as it comes under siege from a violent witch (Li Bing Bing) and pathological warlord (Collin Chou). Screenwriter John Fusco (Hidalgo) and director Rob Minkoff (The Haunted Mansion) have made a slightly chintzy, Western version of a Chinese swords-and-sorcery tale. The gravity-defying, flying-through-the-air-while-fighting choreography looks pretty choppy and graceless compared to, say, the martial arts films of Zhang Yimou. But The Forbidden Kingdom is really aimed at kids, not aficionados of epic fight movies. On that score, the movie aims to please and does so for the right audience. -- Tom Keogh

he Chinese fantasy aspects are authentic, if not accurate (much in the same way the HBO series Rome is not a completely accurate recounting of events, but an authentic recreation of the tone of ancient Rome). They throw in things like The Monkey King and his golden staff, soldier monks, drunken immortals and even The Bride With White Hair. And the Chinese philosophy, for those familiar with it, is spot on.

Jackie Chan and Jet Li are fantastic not only as fighters, but comedically as well. (There's a scene involving rain that had absolutely everyone in the theater laughing hard.) Anganaro puts in a surprising turn physically -- he looks like he got a lot of martial training. Yifei Liu is heartbreakingly lovely.

It's probably a little scary for young kids -- there is some intense violence in the beginning, for instance. And there are sappy moments, as you would expect for a kid's film. But it means well. I have to say that I had a bit of trouble making out the English of some of the Chinese actors sometimes, tho -- and I'm Chinese-American! I worry others might have even worse problems.

There are movies that go heavy on the blood and others than go heavy on the Drama; The Uninvited falls in the latter, just like other movies like Dark Water or Two Sisters. The movie is about a man named Jung-won who is an Interior designer. One day he falls asleep in the subway and he must hurry out before the doors close, but outside he notices that the two kids are still on the train, and he does nothing. The next day he hears on the radio that the 2 children were dead and suddenly he starts seen the kids sitting at his dinner table.

He ignores what is happening to him, probably thinking is the shock of watching the children dead in the train until the day he meets a woman named Yun who suffers from narcolepsy, so he takes her to his home when she loses conscious in his car, and just when she is leaving she tell him to put his kids in bed, so now Jung-won is not the only one seeing the dead kids.

From there Yun helps Jung-won find the gruesome secrets buried in his past, but he is not the only one with a dark past.

The movie has some very shocking scenes that play very well. Both lead actors, Shin-yang Park and Ji-hyun Jun (most known for her part in the romantic comedy (My Sassy Girl") did a fantastic job playing these troubled characters. The cinematography is superb, there were some scenes were I was very impressed.

Tekkonkinkreet (2006) is a landmark in the increasing cross-pollination between Japanese and American animation: Based on a manga by Taiyo Matsumoto, the film was made in Japan at Studio 4C, but directed by American Michael Arrias. The story unfolds in Treasure Town, a scabrous metropolitan slum so gritty it makes the viewer want to clean under his fingernails. Orphans White and Black share an existence at the fringes of an already marginalized subculture. White seems naive, if not learning disabled: at 11, he can't tie his shoes or dress himself. But he has an uncanny sixth sense about what's happening in Treasure Town.

Older, streetwise Black looks after White and receives the emotional support he needs in return: They're two halves of a damaged whole. The arrival of a murderous yakuza boss who wants to demolish Treasure Town and build an amusement park draws Black and White into an escalating spiral of physical and emotional violence. Although the ending of Tekkonkinkreet feels needlessly obscure, it's a striking and often powerful film from a first-time director. Enjoyable Film With James Kyson Lee in the Lead,

James Kyson Lee proves he can carry a film as a leading man. Fortunately, he's also in good company with fellow actors to share the screen with, an amusing script that allows for physical comedy (mostly physical reactions) and a director who knows how to move the story along.

Jim Lee (JKL) was due to be married to the woman he loved, only she's run off with the Filipino DJ who was going to be performing at their reception. If you're not familiar with Chinese culture, it's like pouring salt onto an open wound. A friend takes him on trip to get away from it all and it's there he meets a wouldbe girlfriend. Unfortunately, Jim has also asked his friend (who happens to be an assassin) to murder him before Valentine's Day. With the date looming just ahead and the potential for love on the horizon, anything could happen.

The only complaint I had was the dramatic and somewhat violent final act that felt as if it came out of nowhere before settling back down. Fortunately, it doesn't last as long as it could have and doesn't take away from the film much.

All in all, very enjoyable, especially with Composer George Shaw's score complimenting it.

Along the way she falls in love with the ex-yakuza barman who becomes her guardian angel, bonds with a young Chinese woman trapped in a life of sexual slavery, and finally tracks down the vicious thug who murdered her little sister. Like the Zero Woman films, Beautiful Beast is directed with a terse, tight, grimly serious style, and a soiled morality and doomed fate underlie the mix of slick violence, hot erotic interludes, and unsettling sadism. This is a great fight movie. it's nothing like the other "fight" dvd's out there that promise great fight action but come up far short of the goal. (Yeah, i'm looking at you, ModelFights) This is great, real action.

Best part about it is NO USELESS FILLER! No "redneck" hosts, (as in Brwalin' Broads) NO humorless comedy sketches (as in G.L.O.W., love the product, but hate the pointless comedy attempts) It does have a sometimes annoying "instant replay slow motion feature. (IT"S ON DVD!! WE CAN DO THE SLOW MOTIONT STUFF OURSELVES!)

but if you are looking for a good, solid video of women catfighting, really catfighting, this is a definite must.

I still remember how surprised I was when I saw this movie. Back in the early 90's PC was at it's peak, in addition gay was inextricably linked to AIDS. So imagine my shock when I go to see this movie, a hilarious, touching, movie that gives a wonderfully accurate view of one gay relationship. A couple, one American, one from Taiwan have been together in NYC for years. The Taiwanese man's parents do not know he is gay so keep trying to sign him up for membership in all of these very expensive singles clubs. One of the best scenes is when he and his boyfriend are filling out the application and putting down traits his ideal woman that they think will be impossible to fullfill, "two PHD's, an Opera Singer, speaks 7 languages, ect.." It gets even better when the letter from his parents arrives saying "We've found her" This could have degenerated into a slapstick movie, especially when the parents want to come out to NYC, to throw their son a wedding but it was a Superbly done movie that kept you laughing all the way through. If you have loved any of Ang Lee's Other movies, Sense and Sensibility, Crouching Tiger Hidden Draggon, Eat Drink Man Woman, you will wonder how you've gone so long without seeing this gem. In addition it received an Oscar Nomination for best foreign film "No Subtitles, it is in English" I have loaned this movie out more times than I can count and always have a difficult time getting it back. My only wish is that more gay movies were this high quality.

This is a silly sex comedy about Jenny (the beautiful, very sexy Loletta Lee) and her adventures in love and pleasure. This is not a quiet film, people are shrill, and things are always happening. There is copious nudity in this film, and simulated sex (I think its simulated). It is a cut above films like Porky's since it has a semblance of a plot and its more about the girls. You see Jenny go through boyfriends and the trials and tribulations associated with those relationships.

She has two very pretty girlfriends who are, lets just say, not very shy. So, if you think you would like to see a film like this, its okay. The rating could be one star or ten depending on that. Its a nonsense film, but the girls look great in it, and in parts of the film get the upper hand in the relationships. I'd say if you think you'll like it, check it out.

To be sure, "Girls Unbutton" would not be considered an Academy award contender. However, the film is very cute, somewhat a more mature, Asian version of "Sixteen Candles". It is also a feel-good movie. Lots of nudity, but with lots of humor. Barring its excessive usage of nudity, it would be a good family movie. Too bad I won't be able to share the movie with my little cousins.
Loletta Lee (known as Lee Lai Chun in Cantonese and Lee Li Zhen, in Mandarin) is a Hong Kong actress born on January 8, 1965 in Hong Kong. She later changed her name to Rachel Lee in 2000.

She started playing small roles in Hong Kong movies in the 1980s. Her first role as main actress is in Devoted to You. She continued to play as young teenager in the 1980s until 1990. She wanted to change her innocence image by playing more daring film such as Summer Lovers. In 1993 she made a daring decision by taking her clothes off and starred in Hong Kong Category III film Spirit of Love.

She continued to show her body in Crazy Love, Girls Unbutton and Sex and Zen 2. (Interesting, Spirit of Love was made earlier than Crazy Love; but the distributor of Crazy Love decided to release Crazy Love in Hong Kong theaters during the Hong Kong theatrical release period of Spirit of Love; finally, both movies did well at Hong Kong box office, but Crazy Love did little better.) She also released 2 nude photographic albums. Crazy Love, Girls Unbutton and Sex and Zen 2 become the best selling VCD and DVD until currently.

NIGHTMARE DETECTIVE (a.k.a. Akumu Tantei, 2006) is the handiwork of renowned Japanese director/actor Shinya Tsukamoto who is also responsible for acclaimed hits such as TETSUO 1 & 2 and A Snake of June. I like this director's style, this film may have the largest budget bestowed him, but this director stands by his art, never for a moment does he give in to the pressure of making a studio-approved/influenced film. Tsukamoto just has a bigger budget to give mainstream viewers another shot of the bizarre and macabre. Would you believe that the director of this film also plays the main antagonist? Well, he does, and rightfully so. (Tsukamoto also played the lead in "Marebito", which I will review later)

A beautiful and competent detective named Keiko Kirishima (J-pop star Reiko Hitomi) is summoned to investigate supposedly two separate suicide cases. The supposed "suicides" have a common denominator; the victims dialed the same number on their cell phones just minutes before their demise. When one of the victim's wife makes a statement that she saw her husband cutting himself to pieces while he is asleep, it starts to feel more like a "serial" murder. Keiko and her partner, Wakamiya (Masanobu Ando) decides to enlist the aid of Kagenuma (Ryuhei Matsuda, Izo), a so-called psychic who can enter the dreams of another individual. The mysterious individual on the receiving end of the cell phone calls; "O" be the man behind the bloody incidents? Somehow, "O" holds the same mysterious power that Kagenuma wields.

At first glance, "Nightmare Detective" may feel like a rethread of Miike's "One Missed Call" mixed in with the horror elements of "Dreamscape" and "A Nightmare at Elm Street". However, the film sidesteps those boundaries and while its premise may hold similarities to other films, it plays like the comic book "Hellblazer" with a mixture of dark fantasy and mythology as the factors behind multi-dimensional connections. Water is used to symbolize one's immersion into "deep sleep" or a descent into the abyss and as a conduit to the dream world. "Constantine", anyone? (well, without the action and reliance to visual effects) I was rather a little disappointed that the usual J-horror gimmicks as the film does use a technological device as a link between the victims and the antagonist at first, but thankfully, the claustrophobic and atmospheric feel of the proceedings made me overlook the usual J-horror trappings.

Those who are familiar with Tsukamoto's work such as "Tetsuo" and "A Snake of June"; know that his work often relies on the creative visual manipulations of this director. There is a lot of bleakness in the proceedings, the "grainy" transfer of the film is done on purpose at times in order to allow the viewer to differentiate reality from the dream world. (Although, there are a few times it wasn't used to confuse the viewer). There are also a lot of themes and Christian motifs that involve birth and baptism, rebirth and redemption, damnation to hell and eternal suffering. While these complicated thematic style may be its strength, it may also frustrate those looking for the usual scary thrills. There are quite a lot of intense and disturbing images but somehow I did feel like the surface has only been scratched and further development of its plot still have to be finalized, it feels like a set-up for a bigger film. Well, I've read that "Nightmare Detective 2" is in production, so maybe, as with "Tetsuo 2: Body Hammer", the sequel will hold more answers and close this series more effectively.

Aside from the film's thematic affair that aroused my curiosity, the performances actually do save the film. I rather thought for a first-time performance, very sexy J-pop starlet REIKO HITOMI did a fairly good job. She plays her character with a bit of an edgy, unsettling feel. It was such a grand effort not to be taken by her sheer good looks. Ryuhei Matsuda is an actor that usually has the same style of acting, but he does give an unbalanced depth to his character. I was very impressed with Shinya Tsukamoto's performance. Boy, this director can indeed act with a very creepy charisma. As the main antagonist, Shinya steals the show; his movement and dynamic presence fits his character with an unnervingly, insane portrayal.

Overall, "Nightmare Detective" is a film with modest intentions and I really didn't find that many faults about it. Viewers looking for a fast-paced horror thriller may find their interest beginning to wane after the dream world begins to take center stage. The final encounter has that very surreal feeling that doesn't really reach a finality of closure that may prove to contain the potential to become multiple climaxes. Thankfully, the effort in adding dimensions to its back-story and character depth does succeed that I was rooting for the protagonists all the way. I'm very intrigued to see what this awesome actor/director has next up his sleeve. I'm sold to see "Nightmare Detective 2".

Recommended! For fans of Japanese fantasy/horror films. [3 ½ stars]
