Su Qi-Er (Man Cheuk Chiu) is a wealthy man who lived in the Qing dynasty. Wealth is clearly a target of many people who want to master the wealth. Not a few who would do evil to destroy Su Qi-Er with all sorts of ways. To ensure this plan is successful, a conspiracy was designed. Finally, Su Qi-Er was successfully slandered and richly finished. The man who originally was rich in an instant lost all his property. Fortunately Yuan Ying (Xun Zhou), his wife, remains faithful to assist Su Qi-Er even though her husband has become poor and became a beggar. Had lost everything he had made Su Qi-Er burning grudge.
Su Qi-Er then dedicated his life to learn kung fu and eventually managed to rise, not as a millionaire, as before, but as a powerful warrior. Su Qi-Er and then choose a beggar with a fight against evil and injustice around him. He became known as the King of Beggars. Legend of the King of Beggars is not a new story. TRUE LEGEND At least this is the third film that tried to explore the life story of the famous swordsman with magic tricks that drunk. But do not compare this film with his Drunken Master Jackie Chan or the King of his Beggar Stephen Chow because of the three films seem to TRUE LEGEND is going to be the worst.
Actually, if for mere entertainment, not something wrong with this TRUE LEGEND. Offered ideas simple enough. Chronology of the story is easily understood and certainly a lot of fight scenes of Hong Kong-style movie that would spoil the eye. But if you expect to get satisfaction from the power flow of the story, acting and characterizations are strong, this movie probably is not the right choice.
Yuen Woo-Ping, the director, it still provides excellent martial arts movie although this time fight scenes seem too forced, so inevitably appear dull impression. No one stands out from the side as well as Michelle Yeoh's acting appears only briefly and can not do much for this movie. What's worse, Yuen Woo-Ping did not seem to hesitate to leap into the future so that the formation of a weak character, and consequently no strong bond between the characters with the audience.
